Our Story
A response rooted in compassion.
The story of Sakinah holds grief with care—and carries forward the compassion, solidarity and connection shown by communities after 15 March 2019.
Where the name begins
Sakinah is the feeling of being at peace, settled and belonging.
The name Sakinah (سكينة) is inspired by verses in the Qur’an. It describes tranquillity, calmness, reassurance and peace. Sakinah Community Trust exists to support initiatives that help restore and grow that feeling—in the lives of survivors and across the wider community.
We believe Muslim women can be active agents of change. The Trust is women-led and includes family members of those lost in the attacks, with a commitment to honouring their legacy through long-term community response and engagement.

A legacy of care. A future shaped together.
A continuing response
Remembering with purpose.
We hold the history with honesty and care, and make space for the work of healing, connection and shared responsibility.
A day that changed Christchurch
A terrorist attack at two Christchurch mosques killed 51 people and injured many others. The existing Trust story remembers the compassion and solidarity that followed, and the need to keep that response alive.

Turning goodwill toward community care
Donations given to the Muslim community after the tragedy were managed by the Christchurch Foundation. Sakinah Community Trust now manages grants that direct that legacy toward community-led initiatives.

Making room for belonging
Through its purpose and funding work, Sakinah supports connection, social inclusion, wellbeing and opportunities for communities to take part.

We are not just receivers of goodness but active contributors to the goodness of society at large. From a published Sakinah trustee profile
